Starting as early as October 5th, there will be Niantic currency changes for a range of their games—including Pokémon GO, Ingress, and Pikmin Bloom. What are these changes?

They wanted to provide proactive notice for the upcoming Niantic currency changes. A list of affected regions and countries are as follows:

  • Territories that use the Euro currency
  • Chile
  • Egypt
  • Japan
  • Malaysia
  • Pakistan
  • Poland
  • South Korea
  • Sweden
  • Vietnam

These updates to pricing are happening due to changes in the App Store price tiers. However, they will also make similar currency changes on other mobile platforms, including Google Play.

The Niantic currency changes mean we’ll see an increase in prices for in-game items in Pokémon, Ingress, and Pikmin Bloom. You can read Niantic’s official blog post about the pricing updates here.

The developers have said they won’t take any immediate action in regard to the community response to the changes. However, they will continue to monitor the impact it has, and discuss how to improve the changes in the future.

It’ll be interesting to see how this affects their future games going forward, like NBA All-World and Peridot. The Niantic pricing changes could have huge impacts on microtransactions.
