What is Missing-Link? Is it really a Kingdom Hearts Pokémon GO-styled game? In a recent interview, it was revealed that the mobile addition to the iconic JRPG series will feature an augmented reality mode.

Watch the reveal trailer!

This proposed Kingdom Hearts Pokémon GO-like is theorized to provide us background information between the third and upcoming fourth entry in the series. Even though it’s a spin-off, KH fans know how every entry is important to lore.

The game will take place in the new original world introduced in Kingdom Hearts III – Scala ad Caelum. The world is also known as the “Stairway to Heaven”.

“Fans can also look forward to KINGDOM HEARTS Missing-Link, an all-new game for iOS and Android devices, which allows players to embark on adventures from the realm of Scala ad Caelum into the real world.” – Square Enix

For fans worried about it being a mobile title—Square Enix have confirmed they want to provide a console-level experience. This will be a sweeping change from the previous KH-mobile title, Dark Roads.

Check out some Missing-Link action!

As you can see in the trailer, Square Enix wanted to provide the same 3D action and quality the mainline series titles offers. The combat, action-packed battles, and gameplay will be similar.

Guess what? That isn’t where the good news stops. For the first time ever, players will also get to create their own custom, keyblade-wielding character! You’ll also be able to team up with friends, and hunt down heartless together.

This is a huge first for the series, and the developers also promise a brand-new original story. Not much else is known about Missing-Link, but there will be a beta test coming later this year (and fingers crossed, full release)!

The game was announced at the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary Event. Apparently, the game will have two modes: The augmented reality Pokémon GO-like mode, and a story-based mode with quests and missions.

Some other confirmed features are:

  • Up to 6 player multiplayer.
  • In AR Mode you’ll collect Keyblades and items to strengthen them.
  • Option to play in Portrait or Landscape (Yes! Not many games do this).
  • Story takes place between Union Cross and Dark Road.

There was an official Famitsu interview released with the series director Tetsuya Nomura that covered some details.
