Niantic’s 8th Wall Sky Effects feature has been added. You’ll be able to use the sky itself as a canvas for WebAR to create more immersive, interactive experiences.

8th Wall is an augmented reality development platform from Niantic that allows you to create experiences with just the web—no app required.

Up until recently, 8th Wall has focused on just “ground” augmented reality, allowing users to augment the surrounding environment – until today.

Now, you’ll have the ability to augment the sky itself with the 8th Wall WebAR development kit. You can read all about it over on the official blog post.

Niantic’s 8th Wall Sky Effects is a massive breakthrough for AR developers. Not only that, it looks incredible too—just check out the above GIFS.

We’re hitting a point where the immersion augmented reality can bring… It’ll be like being in an entirely new world.

With 8th Wall, you’ll be able to replace the sky, no matter the weather or time of day. You’ll also be able to change the time of day and the weather itself—and create all new worlds on our own.

It’ll even be possible for developers to allow users to interact with objects off in the distance, or in the sky itself. Sky Effects is available to all 8th Wall developers now.

There’s also a 14-day free trial available. 8th Wall also recently added in easy WebAR custom map features. How long do you think it’ll be before we see some great games made with 8th Wall?
