Niantic developing an Augmented Reality Headset?

What’s this? A few weeks ago, John Hanke – the CEO of Niantic shared an image on social media, teasing what could be an Augmented Reality headset. Sure

Surely everybody remember’s Google’s attempt at a wearable AR display with Google Glasses back in 2013, could Niantic do better?

Here is the tweet in question. Ever since the explosion of Pokemon GO, Niantic has been at the forefront pushing Augmented Reality technology.

John Hanke has talked about the potential of augmented reality through a wearable display as far back as 2017 – so Niantic venturing into the field should come as no surprise.

Back in 2019, Niantic did announce a partnership with Qualcomm to work on a set of Augmented Reality frames, but at the time they said they had no plans. This could be that set of glasses coming to fruition.

Niantic is currently in a really good spot, especially with its game development and potential to bring Augmented Reality mainstream. They recently just started testing a new Pikmin AR game in a partnership with Nintendo.

But what could this mean for the future? Personally, would love to see Niantic expand on their games like Pokemon GO and make it compatible with Augmented Reality glasses. Imagine something like this tech demo below!

Imagine, not far in the future we could be exploring cities and nature in real life for Pokemon through a set of glasses! The future potential of Augmented Reality glasses under Niantic’s platform could be amazing.
